Top Five UK Universities for Student Satisfaction



Results published by the National Student Survey earlier this month have revealed that students studying in the UK remain satisfied by the standard of their courses.

In total, 358 institutions took part in the 2016 National Student Survey, with 86% agreeing with the statement: ‘overall, I am satisfied with the quality of the course.’ Overall satisfaction scores stood at 85 per cent in England, 86 per cent in Wales and Scotland and 89 per cent in Northern Ireland.

Top 5 UK universities for Student Satisfaction

University of Buckingham

  • Has come top in the UK for student satisfaction for the seventh time since it started taking part 11 years ago
  • Britain’s first not-for-profit independent university, which is celebrating its 40th birthday this year
  • Also scored very highly in a number of other areas in the NSS survey – it is top in the UK for the academic support provided to students with 96% of students saying that they had been able to contact staff when they needed to

University of Law

  • Has the highest student satisfaction rate among private and public universities in the United Kingdom
  • ULaw’s LLB programme adopts an innovative approach to learning, encouraging students to think and act like professional lawyers from day one and is taught by tutors who are all qualified lawyers with experience of legal practice
  • ULaw’s tutors received the sector’s highest ranking for enthusiasm about what they are teaching and for being good at explaining their subjects

Keele University

  • Keele ranks first for Chemistry, Geology, Physical Geography & Environmental Science, Physics & Astronomy and has 19 subject areas in the top 10
  • Feedback from Keele’s undergraduate final year students found them to be most happy with well-organised and intellectually stimulating courses, and lecturers being available when needed, good at explaining things and enthusiastic about what they are teaching
  • Top 4% of the world’s universities (Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2015 – 2016)

University of St Andrews

  • 94% of students gave the University top marks for the quality of the learning and teaching experience
  • This is the eighth time in the past 10 years that the University of St Andrews has been ranked in the top two across the UK
  • The Complete University Guide and the Guardian University Guide both named St Andrews top in Scotland and within the UK top five

Harper Adams University

  • Harper Adams University’s satisfaction score increased in 16 of the 23 survey questions
  • At subject level, the university’s largest single group, agriculture students, reflected the overall score with 92 per cent overall satisfaction, unchanged from 2015
  • The new Harper Adams NSS result echoes the outcome of the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey, in which Harper Adams was placed second, as well as the range of Whatuni Awards won by Harper Adams in April
