Overview

The Arts University College at Bournemouth (AUCB), was established in 1885 as a specialist institute, and is now a leading university sector institution, offering high quality specialist education in arts, design and media. In 2008, The Arts Institute at Bournemouth was awarded Taught Degree Awarding Powers, and was subsequently awarded status of University College by the Privy Council. The school name officially changed to THE ARTS UNIVERSITY COLLEGE AT BOURNEMOUTH in July 2009. The AUCB remains passionate about the subjects taught and continues to encourage curiosity, risk-taking and adventure. Staff and students are provided with a well resourced environment in which to practise to the highest professional standards.

Who is The Arts University College at Bournemouth? 

The Arts University College at Bournemouth is a creative community where staff and students share a passion for and a commitment to the disciplines of arts, design and media. Course leaders, lecturers and technicians all enjoy a wealth of practical experience in their subject area and the majority remain actively engaged in their own work through research, practice or both activities. Industry Liaison Groups and Visiting Tutors from art, design, media and performance companies also help ensure that staff and students are kept up to date on current working practices and technological developments within these areas. The Arts University College at Bournemouth offers a specialist environment reflecting the way in which individuals and communities work together in the creative industries. Students studying at this institution are provided with the professional skills, knowledge and confidence to realise their ambitions and to succeed in their chosen career.

Services for International Students

The Arts University College Bournemouth offers international students excellent modern facilities, an opportunity to study at an institution held in high regard by the creative industries, a coastal location, personal and individual approach, small class sizes, vocationally relevant courses, and a high level of employability following studies. AUCB receives a high satisfaction level from its students, and is rated as an 'A' institution with the UK Border Agency.

Each course has an allocated number of places for both UK and international students, to ensure that overseas students integrate with British students as much as possible.

Accommodation

The University College has one campus consisting of a series of purpose-built studios accommodating approximately 3000 students taking full-time courses.

For students considering studying at AUCB there are two main types of accommodation to consider – halls of residence, and private rented accommodation. For further information please consult the AUCB website for arranging accommodation.

Courses on Offer at AUCB

BA (Hons) Degree - a traditional university undergraduate degree programme (three years full time).

Postgraduate Study - an MA course offering pathways in Animation, Costume, Fine Art, Graphic Design, Interactive Media and Photography.

PGCE - a course enabling participants to become effective, specialist teachers in the post-compulsory sector of education, integrating the practical experience of teaching Arts, Design and Media with the professional studies of educational theory.

Study Abroad - a programme for students who may wish to spend time learning in the UK without spending the full 2-3 years studying here.

Foundation Degree (FdA) - a two year (full time) degree programme, for students looking for a practical, work based degree, or for those who might already be in the workplace or planning a career change. Upon successful completion, there may be an opportunity to articulate to the third year of a BA (Hons) Degree.

Preparation for Higher Education - two preparatory courses are on offer for students wishing to enter Higher Education:

  • Foundation Diploma in Art and Design
  • Year 0  

Further education - two further education courses are on offer at AUCB:

  • National Diploma in Art and Design
  • National Certificate in Photography

Short Courses - a variety of short courses in arts, design and media subjects are on offer throughout the year. 

Health Service

AUCB’s Student Services work in partnership with the local Village Surgery providing two on-campus medical surgeries each week. Appointments are available during Monday and Wednesday lunchtimes, and students can make appointments by contacting Student Services on 01202 363703. Students are required to register with the surgery at least 24 hours before appointment.
