Overview
Leeds Metropolitan University is a university with two campuses in Leeds, West Yorkshire England. It gained university status in 1992; prior to this date it was known as Leeds Polytechnic. The number of students is listed as the largest in Britain, excluding the Open University.
In November 2006, the University won the award for "outstanding contribution to the local community" at the annual higher education awards ceremony hosted by The Times Higher education institute. It also came second in the main category, "the University of the Year". In this category, the University was highly commended for its "low-charging, high impact" strategy.
In June 2007, Leeds Met received recognition of its environmentally friendly attitude by being ranked number one in the UK in the Green League 2007: a ranking of sustainability in the higher education sector, compiled by People & Planet.
Services for International Students
Leeds Met. provides the service of ECIS (How to Study in the UK) is an English programme for international and EU students whose first language is not English.
If you feel that an improvement in your English level would help you to get better marks on your main course of study, this course is for you. It offers support with your Academic English and study skills as well as helping you to adapt to the British university system and general life in Britain and is available for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
ECIS is divided into month-long short-courses of two hours per week, which are offered in the following areas:

Some are also run as intensive mini-courses on Saturdays. Shorter versions of some courses (3 hours) are also available some Saturdays.
All students enrolled on the programme can also take part in one-to-one tutorials with a tutor to help you with specific English Language questions and challenges.

Health Centre
The safety, health and well-being team are here to provide support, advice and guidance to the University on a full range of health and safety, occupational health or general wellbeing issues. We aim to give a pragmatic and straightforward service in line with the commitment in the University's Vision & Character statement to provide a healthy working environment that values wellbeing and diversity, makes efficient and imaginative use of resources, promotes professionalism and good governance. Support is available in three main areas.
Wellbeing
Our wellbeing programme is designed to take a broad view of the factors that affect our happiness, confidence, physical condition and general outlook on life. It goes beyond the university workplace to look at how general lifestyle factors impact on the body, state of mind, diet, daily routine and wider environment
Occupational Health
The Occupational Health Team provides professional, specialist advice to employees and managers on the effects of health, at work and in general. They can help identify ways to improve wellbeing in the workplace, and develop strategies to prevent illness and injury arising from work activity.
Health & Safety
The Health and Safety Team provide support and guidance to managers on the management of health and safety risks in the workplace. This includes advice on completing risk assessments so that workplace activities can take place as safely as possible.
