Highly placed among the UK, European and World rankings, Sussex is a leading research university. Its international reputation attracts teachers and researchers at the forefront of their fields, and the university has counted Nobel Prize winners and fellows of the Royal Society and British Academy among its staff

Located at Brighton, the UK’s most exciting seaside city

Sussex is just nine minutes by train from the centre of Brighton — one of the most lively and cosmopolitan cities in England. The city has a superb beach, outstanding choice of restaurants, cafes and bars and every year hosts England’s largest arts festival.

Green campus, just an hour from central London

The university’s beautiful parkland campus has excellent transport links to London and the UK’s two biggest airports — Heathrow and Gatwick.

Voted ‘Best Place to be’ by international students

In an i-Graduate survey adopted by over 200 universities worldwide, international students voted Sussex the ‘Best place to be’ in England (2006 and 2007)— a tribute to the quality of its student experience. Students highly rated safety and the university’s location, transport links, library and expert lecturers.

International scholarships

The Chancellor’s International Scholarships at Sussex support the best in global talent, offering financial support to around 40 exceptional students each year.

Services for international students

Sussex has one of the most diverse international student communities in the UK, with around a quarter of its students from outside the UK – but no more than 200 students from any one country.

The university’s International and Study Abroad Office (ISAO) is there to help students make the most of their time at Sussex and deal with any problems they encounter, with dedicated international advisors for students from China, Japan and South Asia.

The ISAO’s welcome programme includes a week-long series of events, with airport greetings, information sessions on academic matters, finance, health and immigration, local tours and a big welcome party to meet other international students. Social events throughout the year also provide the opportunity for students to relax, have fun and meet new friends from around the world.

Accommodation

Sussex guarantees University-managed accommodation for all international students:

  • for the first year of their degree (if they are an undergraduate or research student)
  • for all of their degree (if they are a full-time postgraduate student from outside the EU)

On-campus — The Sussex campus is a safe and convenient place to live. There are restaurants, shops, banks, bars and a launderette on campus, as well as a doctor and a dentist. To help students settle in, most residences have a live-in residential advisor — a more experienced Sussex student, who will students when they arrive and can assist with any minor problems.

Off-campus (in Brighton) — The University also has a variety of accommodation in Brighton. Students can live in the city centre, close to the sea (King’s Road) or in quieter, residential areas (small off-campus houses). Brighton is lively in the evenings and weekends and is well connected to the campus by Brighton’s award-winning bus service.

Location

Nestled between rolling hills and the blue sea, it’s easy to feel at home in Brighton. Described by Lonely Planet as 'One of England's Gems', the city is lively and cosmopolitan with a friendly, relaxed vibe.

  • Beach One of the UK’s most popular beaches, Brighton beach is a place to hang out with friends, play sport, eat and drink or just relax.
  • Nightlife People often say Brighton has a ‘London culture’ and the nightlife reflects this, offering something for everyone.  The city has many theatres, galleries, cinemas, fashionable bars, live music, live comedy and some of the UK’s best nightclubs. Brighton is also great for dining, with over 400 restaurants (more per resident than anywhere outside London).
  • Shopping Brighton is a delight for shoppers, with several different retail areas - find jewellery and chic designer labels in the 17th-century Lanes, vintage clothing and unique gifts in the North Laines or high-street favourites at Churchill Square and the Marina.
  • Arts Each year the city hosts the Brighton festival (England’s largest arts festival), which brings together film, theatre, dance, comedy, literature, music, street performances and art.
  • People With all of the above, it’s no surprise that people in Brighton are the most positive and feel the luckiest of any town or city in the UK (National Lottery Survey). The quality of life has attracted many creative and innovative people to the city.
