Overview

The University of Wales, Newport is a university based in Newport, South Wales. It can trace its roots back to 1841 and today attracts students from all over the world. The University of Wales, Newport was admitted to the University of Wales as a University College in April 1996 and became a full Constituent Institution of the University of Wales in 2003.

The university has campuses in Caerleon on the northern outskirts of the city and a new second £35 million Campus opening on the banks of the River Usk in the city centre shortly. From January 2011, The School of Art, Media and Design's Design Department and the Newport Film School will be based at the newly-built City Campus alongside Newport Business School, whilst the Newport School of Education and School of Health and Social Sciences will be based at the Caerleon Campus alongside the Photography, Fine Art & Foundation department of the School of Art, Media & Design.

The university was ranked 55th out of 132 UK universities for the quality of research. There has been a significant increase in research activity with the launch of a dedicated Research and Enterprise Department. The university entered only 28 staff for the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, but their work was highly rated compared with most of their peers in similar institutions. More than half of it was considered world-leading or internationally excellent.

Location

The University is situated at Newport, the third largest city in Wales. It has a multi-cultural population of 140,000. Situated halfway between Bristol and Cardiff, Newport has great transport links to locations throughout the UK. It is at the 'gateway to Wales' and is surrounded by beautiful landscapes and historical sites. Thought deep-rooted in cultural heritage, it is constantly developing and has seen major investments in recent years. This 'development' wave in the city is well complimented by the University too.

Campuses

The University currently has two campuses. One campus is just outside Newport's busy city centre, Allt-yr-yn and one is in the picturesque village of Caerleon with a free bus service running regularly between them (via Newport Railway Station and Caerleon Road). Work is well underway on the City Campus on the banks of the River Usk in the city centre to replace the Allt-yr-yn campus.

Ranking

University of Wales, Newport is ranked 96th in the Times Good University ranking 2011.
