Overview
The University of Sheffield is a world famous university, located in Sheffield in South Yorkshire, England. Ranked within the World's top 100 Universities, the University of Sheffield is one of the original 'red brick' universities and a member of the elite Russell Group. The University of Sheffield is a premier-league, research-led institution with a population of over 25,000 students including more than 3,700 international students from 120 countries. The University of Sheffield was originally formed by the merger of three colleges. The Sheffield School of Medicine was founded in 1828, followed in 1879 by the opening of Firth College by Mark Firth, a steel manufacturer, to teach arts and science subjects. Firth College then helped to fund the opening of the Sheffield Technical School in 1884 to teach applied science, the only major faculty the existing colleges did not cover. The three institutions merged in 1897 to form the University College of Sheffield. The University of Sheffield is one of the six original red brick universities.
Ranking
The University of Sheffield is an international leader in teaching and research. Recent surveys put the University of Sheffield in the top 10 of universities in the UK and the top 20 in Europe. The quality of teaching in UK universities is rigorously assessed by the British Government´s Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA). The last Teaching Quality Assessment awarded us grades of "excellent" in 29 subject areas, a record equalled by only a few other UK universities In the most recent RAE, 35 departments at the University of Sheffield achieved top rating of 5 or 5* for internationally recognised research. This was the 6th highest number of any university in the UK. Nobel Prize winners The University of Sheffield has 5 Nobel Prize winners associated with the University. Newsweek
The University of Sheffield is rated 9th in the UK, 18th in Europe and 70th in the world in US publication Newsweek's August 2006 ranking of the global top 100 universities.
Newsweek used some of the measures published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University (see below) and the Times Higher Education Survey. Fifty per cent of the score came from the number of highly-cited researchers, the number of articles published in Nature and Science, and the number of articles listed in the ISI Social Sciences and Arts & Humanities indices. Forty per cent came from the percentage of international faculty, the percentage of international students, citations per faculty member (using ISI data), and the ratio of faculty to students. The final 10 per cent came from library holdings (number of volumes).

Shanghai's Jiao Tong University
The University of Sheffield is rated 8th in the UK, 24th in Europe, and 77th in the world in an annual academic ranking of the top 500 universities worldwide published in August 2008 by China's Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Researchers evaluated the universities using several research performance indicators, including the number of highly cited researchers, academic performance, articles in the periodicals Science and Nature, and the number of Nobel prize winners.

The University of Sheffield is rated 12th in the UK, 22nd in Europe and 68th in the world in the Times Higher Education Supplement's November 2007 ranking of the top 200 universities in the world.
These rankings were derived using a combination of reputational surveys, staff:student ratios, the proportion of international staff and students, and research citations.
Services for International Students
The International Office at the University of Sheffield provides a wide range of services for international students before and during their studies to help them prepare adequately and minimise culture shock. In addition, there is a dedicated international student support service and English language training unit. There are also several social and welfare networks.

Campus
The centre of the University of Sheffield's presence lies one mile to the west of Sheffield city centre, where there is a mile-long collection of buildings belonging almost entirely to the University. This area includes the students' union, the Octagon Centre, Firth Court, the Geography and Planning building, the Alfred Denny Building (housing natural sciences and including a small museum), the Dainton and Richard Roberts Buildings (chemistry) and the Hicks Building (mathematics and physics). The Grade II*-listed library and Arts Tower are also located there.
Health centre
There is an on-campus Health Centre with a range of doctors, nurses and dentists. Students may register with the medical practice which offers regular surgeries by appointment.
