Overview
As one of the UK's leading universities, the University of Bath has an international reputation for research and teaching at the highest academic standard. Located 170km west of London, the University is home to 10,000 full-time students, of which, 2500 are international students from more than 120 different countries. The University of Bath is located on 200 acres of parkland, 2km from the city of Bath.
Bath is a UNESCO World Heritage City (one of only three cities in the world to be on UNESCO's World Heritage List) with a unique combination of tradition, culture and colour. The architecture, Medieval Abbey, world famous Georgian squares and sweeping crescents built of honey-coloured stone, all combine to make Bath one of Europe's most remarkable cities. In the UK, Bath is one of the most visited cities outside of London for international tourists. The city of Bath is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city with striking views, beautiful parks and iconic architecture, such as the Royal Crescent. The Roman Baths date back almost 2000 years and can still be visited today.
Ranking
Bath University was ranked 12th in the UK in the Times Good University Guide 2012, and has actually never been ranked out of the top 20 in The Times League Table. Students tend to like the small and friendly image that Bath University projects.
The University of Bath's major academic strengths have been the physical sciences, mathematics, engineering and technology. Today, Bath is also strong in management, humanities and the social sciences. Courses tend to place a strong emphasis on vocational education/training, and so with many industry links, the University recommends students to take a one-year industry placement in the penultimate year of the course. According to the latest government assessments, Bath has 15 subjects rated "excellent" (the highest on the scale). These are: Pharmacy & Pharmacology; Business & Management (AMBA accredited); Architecture & Civil Engineering; Economics; Computer Science; Electronic & Electrical Engineering; Mechanical Engineering (IMechE accredited); Mathematics, Statistics and Operational research; Education; Molecular Biosciences; Biosciences; Physics and Astronomy; Politics; Hospitality, Leisure, Recreation, Sport and Tourism; Social Policy and Administration.
Services for International Students
University of Bath study workshops help students to adjust to the new academic system and brush up their skills. The University of Bath English language centre offers students free access to English classes in order to support their studies. The University of Bath's welfare team are available for students when they need advice on personal or academic matters. University of Bath joblink and volunteering centre helps students to find part-time work in order to gain valuable working experience whilst living and studying in the UK, while the careers office helps guide students to shape their future. The medical centre and dentist are on campus in case of required medical attention.
After Graduation
The University of Bath Alumni Office welcomes students to the University of Bath international network of over 50,000 alumni. The University of Bath alumni groups are active all over the world and are an excellent way of keeping in contact with the University and with other graduates.
Accommodation
Undergraduate students who apply by the application deadline are guaranteed on-campus accommodation for their first year of study. Postgraduate students classified as 'overseas' for fees purposes, who have not previously studied at Bath, will also be offered a place in off-campus University of Bath accommodation for up to one academic year. Additionally, over 2000 self-catering rooms are provided on campus, and a further 1000 rooms are available in University of Bath city centre residences.
Students' rooms are arranged in groups around communal kitchen/dining areas. Students have the option of both single sex and mixed kitchen groups, and may request standard, large or en-suite rooms. All rooms have network connections to enable students to access email and the internet. Each residential area has a Senior Resident Tutor and a team of resident tutors who live on site and who are available to provide required advice or guidance to all residents. There are 4 Senior Resident Tutors and 33 resident tutors spread amongst the campus and off-campus residences. Resident Tutors are usually PhD students who live with students to ensure that aspects such as welfare, health and safety, social activities, amongst other things are of a high standard for students living in University of Bath residential accommodation.
Campus
The University of Bath's main campus is located on Claverton Down, two kilometres from Bath town centre.
Health centre
The University of Bath Medical Centre is conveniently situated in Quarry House on the main University of Bath Campus. The practice provides a range of NHS services to all patients within the practice area. The majority of patients are part of the University of Bath community. There is also a dental practice in the centre. IThe medical centre is accessible for patients with disabilities. There is a ramp access to the main door and there is a marked parking space in the car park. The practice is part of Bath and North East Somerset Primary Care Trust, which is part of the NHS.
Location
Regular ninety minute train services run directly into central London, and Bristol is only ten minutes away by train, offering connections to the rest of the UK. National Express coach services operate from Bath Coach Station to London Victoria and other destinations. For those seeking quieter retreats, Bath is surrounded by beautiful countryside, with the Cotswolds, the Mendips and the Wye Valley all within easy reach. The west of England is the UK's most popular tourist destination.
