Birkbeck, University of London is located in Bloomsbury and Stratford within the capital and is uniquely known for its teaching taking place in the evening. This leaves students free to pursue other activities from part-time work to internships, and Birkbeck’s flexible approach to study and teaching makes it an attractive destination for international students.

Birkbeck offers many full-time postgraduate and PhD courses and there are around 700 full-time postgraduate students at Birkbeck out of a total of 18,000 from 120 different countries. Currently, 60 per cent are following one-year taught master’s degrees (MA/MSc) and 40 per cent are taking research degrees (MPhil/PhD).

Despite the unique teaching style, Birkbeck scores highly in the quality of its teaching and research. Nine out of ten teachers are also researchers, and over half of the work submitted for the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise was considered world-leading or internationally excellent.

Services for International Students

Birkbeck, University of London organises a number of orientation events, ranging from college-wide to department specific. The general International Orientation Week runs for the first week of each year and features talks on study skills and trips around London.

The mostly part-time degree structure means that Birkbeck is difficult to place in conventional league tables. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise in 2008, over half of the work submitted was considered world-leading or internationally excellent.  Birkbeck submissions from Earth Sciences, Psychology, History, Classics and Archaeology and History of Art, Film and Visual Media were rated in the top five nationally. The college is consistently ranked first for teaching quality in national student surveys.

Birkbeck University of London was shortlisted in the 2010 Times University of the Year awards, while in 2012 it was ranked in the top 200 universities in the world.

Full-time international students are given priority when it comes to applying for accommodation in the University of London’s intercollegiate halls of residence. Birkbeck, University of London also owns houses and flats around London. Outside the university, London has a wealth of private rented accommodation and halls available.

The campus is situated in the heart of London in Bloomsbury, and is surrounded by other colleges such as UCL and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). The University of London Union (ULU) is next door, with high quality sports and social facilities. The International Students’ House, 15 minutes’ walk away, also offers a range of social and recreational facilities.

The college is five minutes’ walk from the British Museum, and within easy walking distance of the well-known West End shopping areas of Oxford Street and Covent Garden. The bars, restaurants and nightclubs of Soho and Chinatown are just down the road, and the West End theatres are almost next door. All this makes for a lively student atmosphere on a city-centre university campus.
