Overview
The University of Southampton is a university situated in the city of Southampton, on the south coast of England. The University of Southampton is a member of the Russell Group and of the Worldwide Universities Network.
In the most recent RAE assessment (2001), the University of Southampton has the only engineering faculty in the country to receive the highest rating (5*) across all disciplines.[2] According to The Times Higher Education Supplement, the University of Southampton has the second largest research income among British universities for the physical sciences and mathematics, and the third largest research income for engineering and technology. Campus
There are six University of Southampton campuses in all - five in various locations around Southampton and one in Winchester.
Highfield Campus
The University of Southampton’s main campus
is set in green and pleasantly landscaped surroundings, just a short
walk from the city centre. Here you will find new and refurbished
student facilities, such as the Jubilee Sports Centre and Students'
Union, the Hartley Library, a range of cafés and restaurants, a
bookshop, a post office and four major banks.
Avenue Campus
Only a few minutes walk from Highfield Campus, Avenue provides a
purpose built environment for the School of Humanities along with the
Centre for Language Study. It also has its own library, lecture
theatres and catering facilities.
Boldrewood Campus
Boldrewood is the purpose-built location for Biomedical Sciences, close
to the Highfield Campus. It has its own library, spacious lecture
theatres, extensive laboratory and computing facilities, a student
common room, catering facilities and a bar.
National Oceanography Centre, Southampton
This is the University of Southampton’s waterfront campus, situated in
the south of the city on the dockside. The National Oceanography
Centre, Southampton is one of the world's leading research centres for
the study of ocean and earth sciences.
Southampton General Hospital
One of the country's leading teaching hospitals and the base for the University of Southampton's School of Medicine.
Winchester School of Art
Founded in 1863, the WSA is based 12 miles (20 kilometres) north of
Southampton in the historic city of Winchester, a short journey by
train or bus. Its purpose-designed buildings include the renowned
School of Art and Textile Conservation Centre, studios, workshops, a
library with special collections and Students' Union.
Health centre
There is an on-campus Health Centre at the University of Southampton with a range of doctors, nurses and dentists. Students may register with the medical practice which offers regular surgeries by appointment.
Location
Southampton is a vibrant and lively city just over one hour from London. There are convenient transport links to UK and European cities. The tourist towns of Winchester, Salisbury and Bournemouth are nearby, as is the New Forest and the world-famous Stonehenge. The English south coast, upon which Southampton is located, offers one of the warmest climates in the UK.
Known throughout history as the ‘Gateway to the World’, Southampton remains a premier international port. Its bustling marina has hosted high profile international boating events such as the Volvo and the BT Global Challenge Round-the-World yacht races.
The population of approximately 221,000 includes some 40,000 students and accordingly the city provides a wide variety of entertainment, sporting and leisure activities.
