Overview
The School of Psychotherapy & Counselling Psychology (SPCP) is a centre of excellence with an international reputation. SPCP offers professional training and academic education in psychotherapy, counselling and counselling psychology at Foundation, Masters, Professional Doctorate and PhD level. The Advanced?Diplomas lead to registration with the UKCP. SPCP is also a leading provider of training in Mediation, Coaching and Alternative Dispute Resolution for businesses.
SPCP advocates a non-doctrinaire 'Integrative Attitude' throughout its courses. Students are exposed to contrasting views in an open and constructively critical manner.
Having established its international reputation as one of the UKfs leading therapeutic training institutions, SPCP aims to provide a wide-ranging and thorough professional training and academic education in psychotherapy, counseling and counseling psychology, at all levels from Foundation to PhD.
SPCP has existed in its current form since 1990, but it grew out of an innovative Masters programme in humanistic psychology which was established in 1977 and accredited by Antioch University, USA.
The MA in Psychotherapy and Counselling course obtained British validation with City University, London, in 1991, whilst the MA in Counselling Psychology/Post-MA Diploma in Existential Counselling Psychology obtained validation from City University and accreditation from the British Psychological Society from 2000. Validation by City University for the MPhil/PhD programme was granted in 1992.
The MA/PgD in Psychotherapy and Counselling, the DCounsPsy (Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology) and the MPhil/PhD in Psychotherapy and Counselling Studies?obtained validation by the University of Wales in 2005.
Validation is a rigorous process of course approval during which the course details are scrutinised by a panel of both University staff and external advisers with appropriate professional expertise, and represents a significant endorsement of the quality of SPCP's training which fully meets the demanding criteria of the UK higher education sector's Quality Assurance Agency.
The School of Psychotherapy and Counselling Psychology's aims are:
* To provide a professional foundation for psychotherapy, counselling and counselling psychology, striking a balance between theoretical and experiential dimensions of learning;
* To emphasise the comparative study of psychotherapeutic theories and techniques whilst paying attention to the philosophical assumptions underlying the theories being considered and the philosophical coherence of those theories;
* To provide students with the intellectual common ground between psychotherapy, counselling and counseling psychology and thereby to contribute to the rationalisation and consolidation of these emerging professions;
* To facilitate an emotional engagement on the part of the student with the subject matter under consideration;
* To produce graduates who think independently, are theoretically well informed and able skilfully and ethically to apply the methods of psychotherapy and counseling in practice, in the belief that knowledge advances through criticism and debate, rather than by uncritical adherence to received wisdom;
* To foster a sensitivity to and awareness of prejudice, in ourselves and in others, towards issues of difference in response to students, clients, and colleagues and in approach to clients' material. These issues include racism, gender, sexual preference, ageism, cultural and ethnic difference, disabilities and class.
The underlying ethos upon which rests the whole of SPCP's educational and training programme is its Integrative Attitude which can be summarised as follows :
* No single perspective or set of underlying values and assumptions is universally shared in current psychotherapeutic thought and practice. The School therefore advocates a non-doctrinaire 'Integrative Attitude' throughout all of its courses.
* This attitude allows competing and diverse models to be considered both conceptually and experientialy so that their areas of interface and divergence can be exposed, considered and clarified. The aim is to highlight the value of holding the tension between contrasting and often contradictory ideas, of 'playing with' their experiential possibilities and of allowing a paradoxical security which can 'live with' and at times even thrive in the absence of final and fixed truths.
* The school believes that this deliberate engagement with difference should be reflected in the manner in which the faculty relate to students, clients and colleagues at all levels. We are hopeful that this philosophical, impartial and innovative attitude will both inspire and appeal to those students who are planning to gain professional psychotherapy accreditation.

Health Services
Medical treatment in the UK is free to all European Union citizens. EU citizens should register with a local National Health Service (NHS) doctor in the area in which they are living. All EU citizens and non-EU citizens resident in the UK are entitled to receive accident and emergency hospital care free of charge, although some non-EU citizens may be charged for treatment of chronic conditions.
Students living on campus are covered for treatment at the local health centre. Students living off campus are advised to register with a local doctor (General Practitioner, or GP). Once they have a UK address they can find their nearest GP by entering their postcode on the National Health website. They will then need to contact the practice, to check how to register. When registering, students will need to provide appropriate documentation (passport and proof of UK address).
