Our University of Essex Humanities Doctoral Scholarships support talented PhD students in their studies with us. These awards are available to students who can demonstrate an excellent academic background and the potential for future achievement. They are awarded for each year of study during the standard period of enrolment for your degree, subject to satisfactory progress.

Once awarded, you'll receive the scholarship for three years of your PhD (subject to satisfactory progression). The scholarship includes:

  • a fee waiver equal to the Home/EU fee (or equivalent fee discount for overseas students). See the terms and conditions below for more details of each award
  • a doctoral stipend equivalent to the Research Councils UK National Minimum Doctoral Stipend (£15,009 for 2019-20
  • a training bursary of £250 per year
  • Proficio funding, which can be used to 'buy' advanced skills training

Eligibility

The departments and schools participating in the University of Essex Humanities Doctoral Scholarship scheme for 2019-20 are East 15, History, Law, Literature, Film and Theatre Studies, and Philosophy and Art History.

You will automatically be considered for this scholarship if:

  • you are holding an offer for a full-time PhD starting in October 2019, or
  • you have submitted a complete PhD application, including all supporting documents required, by 30/05/2019, or
  • you are an existing Integrated PhD or 1+3 student in one of the above departments at Essex who will be entering the doctoral element of study in October 2019

How to apply

You do not need to make an application for an award, as you will automatically be considered if you meet the criteria stated above.
