UCL Hong Kong Alumni Scholarship

Important Information for All Applicants

UCL Hong Kong Alumni Scholarship

One scholarship is available annually for undergraduate study at UCL. Each year the scholarship will be named after the foundation that has funded it for that year - the Professor Denys Holland and Cowan Cheung Scholarship, the Vinson and Cissy Chu Charitable Foundation Scholarship or the UCL Hong Kong Alumni Scholarship.

Eligibility requirements

Applicants must:

  • be holders of Hong Kong Permanent Identity Cards or Chinese citizens who have received full-time education in Hong Kong and/or China for no less than five of the eight years immediately prior to the start of study at UCL;
  • have applied for admission through UCAS and have firmly accepted an offer of admission to full-time undergraduate degree studies at UCL in any area except Medicine;
  • NOT be attending any schools in the UK or currently enrolled at UCL;
  • be liable to pay tuition fees at the rate for overseas students;
  • be in financial need and unable to fund their planned studies at UCL without financial help.

Selection criteria and procedure

The criteria for awarding the scholarship are academic excellence, financial need and any other criteria deemed appropriate or relevant. You will be required to demonstrate that you meet these conditions.

An initial shortlist of applicants will be identified on the basis of academic excellence. Shortlisted applicants will be invited by Hong Kong Foundation to submit to the selection panel as much information about their financial circumstances as possible to assist the panel in making the final decision. Documents submitted should include a summary/schedule of the family's financial means - i.e. assets, income, liabilities and expenses - together with the family's bank statements for the last six months (or bank letter confirming such deposits), parents’ tax assessments and documentary evidence concerning ownership/tenancy of the home, and any mortgages, loans and credit card debts, etc. (subject to parents' consent), as well as evidence of bursaries and scholarships received whilst at school.

Interviews will be held in Hong Kong (normally in July/August) and applicants invited for interview will be required to present themselves for interview in Hong Kong at applicants' own expense.

Value: benefits and duration

The scholarship will provide up to £12,000 per year toward tuition fees for a maximum of four years.

Annual renewal of the scholarship is subject to satisfactory progress equivalent to upper second-class honours throughout the programme. A report of unsatisfactory progress may result in termination of funding.

Application deadline and procedure

The deadline for the application is Friday, 19 April 2019 at 5pm (UK Time).
