Overview

Established in 1881, the University of Liverpool is one of the UK’s oldest civic universities with an excellent academic reputation. More than 4,000 international students from over 100 countries are currently studying at the University of Liverpool, following in the footsteps of the nine Nobel Prize winners associated with the university. Liverpool was named as the 4th favourite UK city behind London, Bath and Edinburgh (Conde Nast Traveller Survey 2011) and the UK’s ‘friendliest city’ by the same survey in 2010 and 2011.

Ranking

The University of Liverpool was ranked 28th in the Times Good University Guide 2011. As a Russell Group Institution, teaching and learning is undertaken within a culture of research excellence. A total of 53% of research staff were ranked in the highest categories of 4* (world-leading) and 3* (internationally excellent) in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). The University of Liverpool is the 15th largest research university in the UK, with the 10th largest annual research income in the Russell Group (The Financial Times).

Services for International Students

The University of Liverpool has support systems in place for international students including a Student Administration Centre which helps with registration, fees, documentation, loans, grants and exams, and an International Support Team who specialise in providing support to all international students from immigration issues, work permits, finance and funding to academic and personal problems.

Accommodation

The University of Liverpool provides a wide selection of catered and self-catering accommodation to students. International students are guaranteed a place in University accommodation in their first year if they accept an unconditional firm or conditional firm offer and apply for accommodation by the end of August.

Accommodation for postgraduate students is provided at the University of Liverpool's self-catering residences on the campus. This central location gives easy access to academic departments, libraries, the Guild of Students and Liverpool's thriving cultural scene.

Campus

The University of Liverpool is the originator of the ‘redbrick university’ classification of Victorian era universities, named after the distinctive red facade of the University’s Victoria Building, built in 1892. More recently, a £200m capital development programme to transform the University of Liverpool campus is evidence of the University’s commitment to high standards of teaching and research.

There are two main libraries at the University of Liverpool, both open 24 hours a day, housing more than 1.8 million books, 17,000 electronic journals and special collections such as the largest Science Fiction collection in Europe.

With the latest IT facilities and high-quality computing support services, you will have access to several thousand networked PCs; Broadband internet access in university accommodation and Wi-Fi access across the campus. The University of Liverpool also has a sports centre with a 33m swimming pool, two sports halls, four squash courts, a dance studio and more.

In a multi-cultural and multi-faith city like Liverpool, there are also places of worship for different religions and faith both on and off campus. The University of Liverpool’s Faith Express drop-in centre can help you find information and contact details for all major faiths in Liverpool.

Health centre

There is a full range of on-campus health facilities at the University of Liverpool with doctors, nurses and dentists. All students have full access to the health centre and all health care fees are fully covered by the National Health Service for full time students.

Location

Liverpool is a major port city in the north west of England, famously associated with its passionately supported football club (European champions in 2005) and its favourite sons, the Beatles. The port of Liverpool has played an important role in world history and this is reflected in its famous skyline which was awarded World Heritage Site status in 2004.

Liverpool is served by John Lennon Airport for destinations to Europe and is just 45 minutes away from Manchester International Airport and a range of global destinations. The University of Liverpool offers a free transport service from Manchester International Airport to Liverpool for new international students arriving at the start of the academic year.
