Overview
Northumbria University is consistently ranked among the leading universities created out of the polytechnics and a recent (2007-2010) £136 million investment in its city centre campus is gradually producing state of the art facilities.
The library has already had a £6-million refurbishment and the new development will include a £20-million sports centre, which is due to open in 2009.
There are now 27,000 UK students with more than half of these coming from the North of England, making Northumbria University one of the largest universities in the UK.
Ranking
Five of Northumbria University’s academics have won National Teaching Fellowships and the art and design departments reached the top three grades. Many degrees are available as sandwich courses, with placements of up to a year in business or industry.
Law and business studies have the highest entrance requirements. Sport plays a growing role as Northumbria University is consistently among the top ten in the British Universities Sports Association rankings. The sports scholarship programme has supported over 200 athletes from over 40 sports in the past ten years, some going on to success at the highest level.

University Residences
Northumbria University has increased the amount of accommodation it provides and can now offer a place on campus to most new non-local students who apply in good time.
Private Accommodation
The Accommodation Service has details of hundreds of private properties as well as University accommodation. Accommodation Services staff are on hand all year to offer information and advice about all aspects of student accommodation and advise on such things as landlord/tenant problems.
Campus
Northumbria University has two campuses. The main campus, located in the City of Newcastle upon Tyne, is known as the City Campus. With the construction of a new building for degree courses such as business the City Campus has been spilt in two. There is now a City Campus East and a City Campus West.
A secondary campus is located a few miles outside of Newcastle, on Coach Lane, and is known as the Coach Lane Campus. This campus is home to the School of Health, Community and Education Studies only, all others schools are located at the City Campus. A free Shuttle Bus runs between the two campuses at hourly intervals during University opening times and also runs until approximately 2200 Monday to Friday.
Health centre
There is a full range of on-campus health facilities at Northumbria University with doctors, nurses and dentists. All students have full access to the health centre and all health care fees are fully covered by the National Health Service for full time students.
Location
Newcastle is situated in the North East of England, about 4 hours north of London by train.
The climate in Newcastle is temperate, although significantly warmer than some other locations at a similar latitude due to the warming influence of the Gulf Stream, also, it is among the driest cities in the UK.
The city of Newcastle has a population of about 200,000, making Newcastle a medium sized city.
