Overview

Founded in 1413, St Andrews is the oldest university in Scotland and one of the most prestigious higher education institutions in the UK. Only Oxford and Cambridge have a longer history among British universities. The history of the town of St Andrews has long been intertwined with the fortunes of its University. By the middle of the sixteenth century the University of St Andrews University had three colleges called St Salvator's, St Leonard's, and St Mary's: the buildings of St Mary's College and St Salvator's Chapel both date from this period. By the eighteenth century St Salvator's and St Leonard's Colleges had joined to form the United College which still survives in a greatly enlarged form.

In the nineteenth century the University of St Andrews made considerable progress in developing teaching and research in the Arts, Divinity and the Biological and Physical Sciences. In 1897 the University was joined by a new academic centre in Dundee and with it gained notable achievements in Medical and Applied Science. This association ended in 1967 with the foundation of a separate University of Dundee.

Today, the University of St Andrews enjoys an enviable reputation in the Humanities, with International Studies, Development Studies and Peace and Conflict Studies particular areas of excellence. Management Studies and Psychology are other subjects in which the University of St Andrews has an excellent reputation.

Campus

Physically the University of St Andrews is closely integrated with the town; the modern purpose-built library and many academic Schools are located centrally. The growth in physical and mathematical sciences has been accommodated at the North Haugh on the edge of St Andrews. A modern sports centre with adjacent playing fields and halls of residence are also located in this area. St Andrews is relatively small, despite being a city, with a basic population approaching 17,000. The University population (staff and students) numbers nearly 9,000. On average one in three people you see in the street have something to do with the University. You start to feel very quickly that you belong.

Health centre

There is a full range of health facilities at the University of St Andrews with doctors, nurses and dentists. All students have full access to the health centre and all health care fees are fully covered by the National Health Service for full time students.

Location

St Andrews is a compact city of 17,000 residents on the east coast of Scotland. The city is steeped in fine architecture and considered one of the most picturesque places in Scotland. Despite the long history of the University and students accounting for a third of the population of the town, St Andrews is arguably even more famous for being the spiritual home of the sport of golf.

The nearest train station to St Andrews is Leuchars on the main East Coast mainline, though as this station is around 7km away from the town itself, a short bus journey is also necessary. From Leuchars, the nearest major city is Dundee, a short journey by train. The capital of Scotland, Edinburgh, is less than an hour’s train journey to the south.
