Chevening is the UK Government’s international awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders. The application period runs from August to November each year.

Chevening Scholarships are the UK Government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations. The programme makes awards to outstanding scholars with leadership potential from around the world to study postgraduate courses at universities in the UK. Awards are typically for a one-year master’s degree. What it covers

The scholarship covers tuition fees, travel and a monthly stipend plus more.

A full Chevening Scholarship normally* comprises:

• Payment of tuition fees (Chevening applies a tuition fee cap of £18,000 to MBA programmes - applicants will be expected to cover the remaining costs above the £18,000 cap);

• Economy travel to and from your country of residence by an approved route for you only;

• An arrival allowance;

• The cost of an entry clearance (visa) application for you only;

• A departure allowance;

• A contribution of up to £75 for TB testing, where this is required;

• A travel top-up allowance;

• A monthly personal living allowance (stipend) to cover accommodation and living expenses. The monthly stipend will depend on whether you are studying inside or outside London. These rates are subject to annual review. Stipend payments will be made to you on or around the 21st of the month for the following full month. Where you arrive in the UK or leave the UK part way through the month, the stipend for that month will be adjusted as appropriate.

Commonwealth Scholarships for master’s and PhD study in the UK are offered for citizens of selected Commonwealth countries.

These scholarships are funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), with the aim of contributing to the UK’s international development.

Students from developing countries who would not otherwise be able to study in the UK can apply for Commonwealth Scholarships for master’s or PhD study.

Purpose: to contribute to the development needs of Commonwealth countries by providing training for skilled and qualified professionals and academics who would not otherwise have been able to study in the UK.

What it covers

• Approved airfare from your home country to the UK and return at the end of your award (the CSC will not reimburse the cost of fares for dependants, nor usually the cost of journeys made before your award is finally confirmed).

• Stipend (living allowance) at the rate of £1,133 per month (rates quoted at 2021-2022 levels).

• Thesis grant towards the cost of preparing a thesis or dissertation, where applicable.

Who can apply

To apply for these scholarships, you must:

• Be a citizen of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person

• Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country

• Be available to start your academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in the following September/October;

• If you are a PhD applicant, you must have the support of a potential supervisor from at least one UK university listed in your application form;

• Be unable to afford to study in the UK without this scholarship.

The CSC would not normally fund a second UK master’s degree. If you are applying for a second UK master’s degree, you will need to provide justification as to why you wish to undertake this study.

Regular Scholarship Registrants must meet the following special requirements:

    • applicants for masters education are aged 35 (thirty-five) years at the most.

    • Doctoral Program registrants must have a Cumulative Achievement Index (GPA) at the previous level of study of at least 3.25 on a scale of 4 or equivalent as evidenced by an authentic or legalized transcript.

    • Specifically for Doctoral level registrants graduates of master programs who only conduct research and do not have a GPA (Master by Research), must attach a diploma, the results of the research session, and transcript (if any) then in the registration application fill in a minimum GPA of 3.25.

    • For Overseas Graduates, the GPA value is converted through the link https://www.scholaro.com/gpa-calculator/ and the conversion results are uploaded / attached together with the score transcript.

• Having an Unconditional LoA from tertiary institutions listed in the LPDP list specifically for Doctoral level applicants;

• Have an official certificate of English language ability that is still valid and issued by ETS (www.ets.org) or IELTS (www.ielts.org) or Arabic language institutions (specifically TOAFL) with the following conditions:

  • Domestic master program applicants score minimum English language proficiency TOEFL ITP® 500, TOEFL iBT 61, IELTS 6.0, TOEIC® 630, or TOAFL 500 for study programs and / or Islamic tertiary institutions that require TOAFL as an entry requirement.

Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a postgraduate degree in the United Kingdom.

The awards are mainly funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and are overseen by the Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission. 

Founded by a 1953 Act of Parliament, and named in honour of US Secretary of State George C Marshall, the scholarships commemorate the humane ideals of the Marshall Plan and express the continuing gratitude of the British people to their American counterparts.

The one-year Marshall Scholarship is aimed at applicants who have strong reasons for wishing to study in the UK, but have a clear post-scholarship plan that would mean a one-year award would work better for them than the two-year Marshall Scholarship.

What it covers

The total value of a Marshall Scholarship varies according to the circumstances (place of residence, selected university etc) of each scholar, but the figure tends, on average, to be around £30,000 a year. 

This amount comprises:

• A personal allowance to cover residence and cost of living expenses at a rate of £1,065 per month;

• Payment of tuition fees;

• Travel fares to and from the United States;

• Claimable allowances, totalling approximately £3,300, including:

• A grant for books;

• A grant for approved travel in connection with studies;

• Payment of necessary daily expenses for travel between place of residence and place of study, provided the distance between the two is reasonable;

• A grant for the cost of preparation of any thesis submitted for examination, if required;

• Shipping of property to and from the United States.

Who can apply

To be eligible for a 2020 Marshall Scholarship, candidates must:

• Be citizens of the United States of America (at the time they apply for a scholarship);

• (By the time they take up their scholarship, i.e. September 2018) hold their first undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States;

• Have obtained a grade point average of not less than 3.7 on their undergraduate degree (applicants must have a GPA of 3.7 at the time of application);

• Have graduated from their first undergraduate college or university after April 2017;

• Not have studied for, or hold a degree or degree-equivalent qualification from, a British university, or GCSEs or A levels taken at school in the UK.

Degrees not funded under the Marshall Scholarship:

• Second BA/BSc (undergraduate) degrees;

• MBA (any university);

• MSc/MFE Financial Economics (any university);

• Degrees leading to professional qualifications in medicine, dentistry, veterinary science and law (these degrees typically take five years to complete);

• Degrees that require extended periods away from the chosen university or the UK, including joint degrees with universities not in the UK;

• PGDip/certificates in any subject;

• Supervised research not leading to a degree qualification.

Candidates must fill out the form and submit it through the system to their undergraduate institution, the institution ensures that the application is complete and decides whether or not to endorse it. If the institution decides to endorse the application they will add the letter of endorsement and will then submit it through the system to the appropriate regional committee. Candidates may apply in one region only - either the one in which they have their permanent home address or ordinary place of residence/employment, or the one in which they are studying. Any candidate applying in more than one region will automatically be disqualified.
