Sharp increase in Japanese students studying abroad

02 June 2023

According to data from The Japan Association of Overseas Studies (JAOS), the number of Japanese students studying abroad in 2022 was fivefold higher compared to the previous year.

The survey of 40 education agents revealed that over 34,000 Japanese students were enrolled in various study abroad programmes and also indicated a significant increase in the number of students travelling to study abroad, rising from approximately 6,000 students in 2021 to just under 30,000 students in 2022. JAOS attributed these trends to the relaxation of Japan's border control policies in the latter half of 2022.

Tatsuhiko Hoshino, executive secretary at JAOS, PIE that, “It is anticipated that by promoting study abroad to this group, the Japanese government can encourage a significant number of high school students to consider studying abroad.”
