Scholarships at Loughborough University

We understand the pressure of combining university studying with elite level sport.

All student athletes in our performance programmes benefit from our unrivalled support and ethos of sporting development.

Performance programme members receive thousands of pounds worth of support, incorporating coaching, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, sports science, nutrition, psychology, lifestyle and academic flexibility. In addition to this incredible support, our sport scholarships provide direct financial support.

We have performance programmes for athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, cycling, football, hockey, netball, rugby union, squash, swimming, tennis, triathlon and women's wheelchair basketball. We would also consider offering sport scholarship support to outstanding summer Olympic and Paralympic applicants.

An annual programme of music and arts scholarships is offered by LU Arts – the University’s extra-curricular arts programme. These scholarships recognise and develop talent and potential in any artform including music, creative writing, performing arts and visual arts.

Students who exhibit a clear skill and passion for an artform outside of their studies could receive one of nine annual music and arts scholarships. These scholarships are designed to support talent development, enabling students to progress in their chosen artform. It is not about ‘being the best’, rather it is about showing passion and clearly articulating what benefits the scholarship would offer.

Scholarships are available in any art form, which may include musicians, singers, writers, performers, dancers, photographers, film makers and artists working in any medium. Each scholarship package includes a cash prize and a tailored package of support for the year. This support may include tuition, training or mentoring. There are also opportunities for scholars to perform at and/or organise events to help contribute to the creative life of the University.

To reward outstanding academic achievement, we are pleased to be able to offer our Loughborough University International Scholarships to eligible applicants holding an undergraduate offer of a place with the University.

These prestigious awards are currently to the value of 25% of tuition fees for the first year of study which we hope shows our commitment to encouraging and supporting well qualified international students to study in the UK.

Which subject areas offer International Scholarships?

All of our undergraduate degree programmes offer the International Scholarship, with the exception of our Foundation programmes.

Application process and eligibility criteria

International applicants are automatically considered for a Loughborough University International Scholarship on the basis of their initial application made through UCAS.

Successful applicants will be advised if they are being awarded a scholarship soon after they receive their offer communication from the University’s Admissions Office.

All of our programmes will require AAA from three A levels (or equivalent qualification*) with the exception of the following programmes, which require A*AA:

• MEng Aeronautical Engineering

• MEng Automotive Engineering

• MEng Mechanical Engineering

• BSc Sport and Exercise Science

• MSci Natural Sciences

Loughborough University is delighted to offer a CBF (20%) scholarship to support postgraduate taught students from Africa for the October 2023 and January 2023/2024 intake. The scholarship has been created as part of the Loughborough University Strategy 2030, ‘Creating Better Futures. Together’, to help African students access postgraduate-level study at Loughborough University.

Scholarship amount

20% scholarship awarded as a tuition fee discount only and is not applicable to accommodation or living costs whilst in Loughborough.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

• Hold an offer to study a full-time postgraduate taught course with Loughborough University for the October 2023 or January 2023/2024 intake

• Be a self-funded student

• Be domiciled (permanently living) in Africa

• Be an international fee status applicant.

The Loughborough Development Trust Africa Scholarship will cover 100% of the course fees for your chosen postgraduate taught course for one year (replacing any departmental or Loughborough University scholarships or bursaries you may already have been awarded).

The University will award a limited number of scholarships, and the standards required are very high. 

Students will be expected to fund their travel and maintenance costs through other sources. Evidence of maintenance funds must be included in the scholarship application.

The scholarships are being funded through a combination of generous external funding and University funds.

Application process and eligibility criteria 

The scholarship application procedure is an open competition. Students may only apply for the scholarship after an offer for a place has been made. Students who are in possession of an offer (conditional or unconditional) of a place on a postgraduate taught course can apply for the scholarship using the application form which is available to download below.

Applications will be initially shortlisted and the final decision on the awards will be made by a selection panel of senior staff of the University. The selection panel will use the following eligibility criteria when assessing applications:

• Currently domiciled (permanently living) in Africa

• Evidence of exceptional academic achievement (normally a first-class honours degree)

• Commitment to return to their home country on completion of their postgraduate programme

• Evidence of the ability and commitment to making a significant contribution to their home country on their return

• Full understanding of the costs involved in coming to study and live in the UK

• Evidence of strong motivation and initiative to secure funds to cover the remainder of the costs involved

Applicants are advised to spend considerable effort ensuring that this application reaches the selectors in a form that is clear, well presented and which reflects their abilities and motivation.
