Scholarships at Universidad de Swansea

In partnership with the British Council and the GREAT Britain Campaign, Swansea University is offering one £10,000 scholarship to students from Turkey pursuing one-year postgraduate study in the UK.

To meet the eligibility criteria you need to apply to study MEng, MSci, MSc, MPharm, MBBCh, MA, LLM or MRes postgraduate courses at Swansea.

Please note that applicants should be residents and citizens of Turkey.

The deadline for applications is 13th June 2025 at 12:00 GMT.

Each year we have a number of International Excellence Scholarships available for students who have already demonstrated academic excellence or show potential to do so during their time at Swansea University.

Scholarships are awarded as a discount on tuition fees and worth up to £5000 for postgraduate taught courses and MRes programmes.

Terms and Conditions

• Applicants must be classed as overseas fee payers.  If the fee status of the applicant changes after the scholarship application is made, then the University will need to remove the scholarship.

• Applicants must have applied for and received an UNCONDITIONAL offer to study at Swansea University on a course starting in the academic year 2025/26 at Undergraduate or Master’s level.  

• Students studying for a PhD, MPhil, Masters by Research, Graduate Diploma in Law, Postgraduate Diploma, Postgraduate Certificate, Go Global Visiting, Exchange or Erasmus Mundus programme are not eligible to apply for this scholarship.

• Students on BSc, BA, BEng, LLB, MEng, MSci, MSc, MPharm, MBBCh, MA, LLM, MRes (not the same as Masters by Research) are eligible. 

• Students applying to study at Master’s level must hold a minimum 2:1 from their undergraduate degree.

• Students who will undertake part-time study or distance learning are not eligible to apply.

• Students studying at or progressing from ‘The College Swansea University’ are not eligible to apply for this scholarship.  

• Students whose course fees are lower than £16,000 are not eligible to apply.

• Students progressing from UG to PG are eligible to apply. 

• Alumni are eligible to apply.  Other terms and conditions apply with regards to other awards open to alumni, which may result in an award not being made in the full amount, or at all.  

• Applicants must have demonstrated excellence in their academic performance to date and be able to show what they will achieve at Swansea University in their application.  

• Applicants must be self-funded i.e. not in receipt of sponsorship funding from their home country / sponsor body, or external third party organisation.  If funding is confirmed after the scholarship is awarded, then the University reserves the right to remove it according to this condition.

• Scholarships will be used to offset tuition fees only and cannot be used for any other purpose.  

• The scholarship will be applied to the course fees for the academic year stated in the offer letter.  If an offer for a course is deferred, then an applicant must reapply for the scholarship, unless there are exceptional circumstances, to be confirmed by the University.  Applicants must request the scholarship deferral in addition to the course start date referral.  It will not be automatic. 

• Successful candidates will have their tuition fee levied at enrolment. Candidates must confirm acceptance of their scholarship, accept an offer of a place on a course and pay their deposit.

• Successful undergraduate applicants awarded the maximum (£5,000) International Excellence Scholarship in their first year of study at Swansea, who achieve 70% and above in their first year of study will be eligible for a further £2,000 in their second year of study. This includes students who transfer and join the second year of a UG degree at Swansea.

• International Excellence Scholarships are available for the first year only of a postgraduate degree programme. Two year masters with industry are not eligible for any scholarship in their industry year.

• The International Scholarship Committee may use whatever means of assessment it thinks most appropriate in order to determine which candidates are worthy of recommendation for the award of a scholarship, should any of the terms, conditions and eligibility criteria not apply, or be unclear, or should the applicant’s situation change.

• The International Excellence Scholarship (IES) is awarded by the Swansea University International Development Office (IDO). Applicants can be in receipt of IES in addition to a scholarship or bursary awarded by another department in the University, subject to those eligibility, terms and conditions also allowing.  Students are responsible for checking the criteria for each scholarship or bursary applied for.  The University will withdraw any additional scholarship that has been awarded in error, or by change of circumstances. IES cannot be combined with other scholarships or bursaries also awarded by the IDO. Where a student has been awarded both IES and another award from the IDO, the higher value award will replace the lower value award.

• The combined scholarship amounts cannot exceed £7,000, therefore the IDO will not make an award in addition to any other University award, which will amount to more than this.  E.g. If a candidate is offered £5,000 from another University award, the maximum IDO can award is £2,000, taking the combined amount to the maximum £7,000 allowed. This includes staff awards where 50% tuition fee discount is applied. 

• Scholarship holders, having accepted an award, are reasonably expected to co-operate in Swansea University recruitment activities and automatically agree to their names and details being released by the University’s International Development Office for marketing purposes. 

• If it is deemed necessary for a Scholarship holder to suspend their studies, the scholarship will be held on university account and carried forward to the year of resumption of studies and the candidate will be expected to pay their personal contribution on a pro-rata basis.

• If, in the view of the appropriate Head of School, a Scholarship holder’s progress is deemed to be unsatisfactory, the Scholarship may be withdrawn.  A Scholarship may also be withdrawn on grounds of failure to comply with any of the conditions attached to the Award. The candidate may be required to repay to the University any award that has been made, either in whole or in part, as determined by the Committee. If the scholar feels that such a withdrawal is unjustified, they may appeal in writing to the Head of the International Development Office within 15 working days of the date of notification.

• Having accepted an award, should a Scholarship holder withdraw from the University, the holder will be liable to repay to the University any award which has been made, either in whole or in part, as determined by the Committee.

• The International Development Office reserves the right to make, amend, withdraw, suspend or cancel without notice these and such other regulations as may be in force from time to time and such decisions shall be final.

• Scholarships are awarded at the discretion of the awarding committee, and it may be that applicants are awarded a scholarship of a higher or lower amount to the one for which you may have originally applied.

The scheme is open to International Swansea Alumni candidates applying for a Taught Master’s or Research degree in any subject area.

The definition of ‘alumni’ is candidates who have successfully completed a ‘full’ degree programme at Swansea University for example:

• students who have qualified with a Bachelor degree applying for a Taught Master’s or Research programme.

Or

• a Taught Masters’ student applying for a further Taught course, subject to meeting Same Level Study regulations.

Or

• a Taught Masters’ student applying for Research programme. 

 The following candidates are NOT eligible for an Alumni Bursary:

• Students deemed eligible to pay tuition fees at the Home (UK) rate

• Exchange students

• Visiting/Associate students (including English Language students)

• The College, Swansea University Foundation/Pre-Master’s Programme students

• CELTA students, students on professional courses LLM Law and Legal Practice and LLM Professional Legal Practice

• Students qualifying with an ‘exit’ qualification

• Students upgrading from MPhil to PhD.

Awards

Eligibility

• Students must be assessed as an overseas student for tuition fee purposes in relation to their most recent postgraduate application.

• Alumni Bursaries are only available to students who have met the minimum academic requirement for an award (see above table for details).

• Alumni Bursaries are available for both full and part-time study. For students studying part-time, the award will be made on a pro-rata basis.

• Students must have satisfactorily completed the original degree programme that they were admitted to at Swansea University (excludes ‘fall-back’ qualifications).

Terms and Conditions:

• Students must normally be privately funded**.  The Alumni Bursary cannot be taken in conjunction with any scholarship from a student’s national government or other sponsor.

• The Alumni Bursary may only be used to offset tuition fees.

• A reduced tuition fee will be levied at enrolment for the duration of the programme of study, subject to satisfactory annual progression.

• Alumni Bursaries are non-transferable.

• Employees of Swansea University will not be eligible.

• The Admissions and Recruitment Committee may use whatever means of assessment it thinks most appropriate in order to determine which candidates are worthy of recommendation to Senate for the award of an Alumni Bursary. 

• Alumni Bursary holders, having accepted an award, may be contacted by the University’s Public Relations Office.

• If it is deemed necessary for an Alumni Bursary holder to suspend their studies, the Bursary will be held on University account and carried forward to the year of resumption of studies and the student will be expected to pay their personal contribution on a pro-rata basis.

• With the approval of the Vice-Chancellor or nominee, if an Alumni Bursary holder’s progress is deemed to be unsatisfactory, the Bursary may be withdrawn. If the student feels that such a withdrawal is unjustified, s/he may appeal in writing, using the University’s formal appeal mechanism.

• Senate reserves the right to make, amend, withdraw, suspend or cancel without notice these and such other Regulations as may be in force from time to time and such decisions shall be final.  

 **Students in receipt of a part-scholarship (up to 50% of full tuition fee) may be considered for an alumni award. 

The Swansea University International Postgraduate Research Excellence Scholarship (SUIPRES) is a competitively awarded scholarship scheme open to overseas PhD and Professional Doctorate applicants, who are eligible for the international rate of tuition fees and can demonstrate excellence in academic achievement.

The SUIPRES Scholarship covers the difference between the International and the Home tuition fee rate for the duration of the PhD/Professional Doctorate programme. Successful candidates will be charged fees aligned to the UK rate per year. The scholarship is offset against your tuition fees, and the scholarship value will be deducted from your tuition fees.

Our choral and organ scholarship scheme is designed to support the scholar's development as a musician, in partnership with St Mary’s Church, Swansea. The scholarships are funded jointly between the University, St Mary’s Church, and the Swansea St Mary’s Choral Trust (SSMCT).

Scholars receive the following benefits:

• Up to fifteen hours of individual tuition per year in their instrument or voice.

• An annual bursary of £650.

Scholars are expected to participate fully in the music of St Mary’s Church, Swansea.
