Studying Forensic Science at UCLan: The Student View
- Beginning my application
“I did my first degree in Industrial Chemistry in Nigeria, although I initially wanted to study Pharmacy. Following my BSc, I started researching chemistry specialisations, which was when I first encountered Forensic Chemistry as a postgraduate option. My curiosity led me to read more about Forensic Science, and my interest in Forensics soon grew into a passion. To my utmost amazement, no university in Nigeria offered a master’s in forensic chemistry or forensic science.
“At that point, two things became clear to me: I wanted to become a forensic scientist, and I had to travel and study outside of Nigeria to achieve that goal. Naturally, the UK’s reputation as a leader in the education sector influenced my decision to focus on universities in the UK, so I intensified my search and found several universities in the UK offered versions of Forensic Science studies.
- Applying for a Chevening scholarship
“So, how did I end up in UCLan? Well, that’s where Chevening came in. Knowing that I could not afford to sponsor myself to a UK university for Masters, I completed a master’s programme in Organic Chemistry in Nigeria whilst intensifying my search for scholarships. In June 2019, I heard about the Chevening scholarship and decided to apply when applications opened in August. The scholarship application process helped me clarify my purpose, define my life goals, and outline my career plans, so much so that even if I had not won the scholarship, I was sure of what both my short- and long-term career plans were. Having this made clear was an achievement on its own, so you can imagine the height of my excitement when I made it through to final selection for the scholarship. Chevening Scholarship is a dream-enabler!
“It required applicants to select three universities in order of preference when submitting their application. During my research, I surveyed the course contents of almost every UK university that offered a master’s in forensic science. In the end, I had no hesitation in choosing UCLan as my first choice because the Crime Scene Investigation modules were just perfect for me. Apart from the fact that UCLan was a Chevening-Partner institution, there also other factors that influenced my choice.
- Choosing Forensic Science at UCLan
Of all the universities I researched, I discovered that the Forensic Science modules at UCLan, were the most practical-based ones. The option to major in Crime Scene Investigation with hands-on laboratory experience was something I did not find elsewhere.
“Another factor that influenced my decision was the wealth of experience and industry experience of the UCLan lecturers, with all of them having worked for many years as forensic scientists, and some of them still actively combining practice with teaching. This quality resonated so well with my laid-out career plans, and I knew that being taught by them would also be an opportunity for mentoring.
- Realising my dreams
“I remain grateful to the Chevening scholarship and UCLan for the partnership that affords me this fully funded scholarship. I am also thankful for the privilege to serve as the Course Representative for the MSc Forensic Science September 2020 intake. I have no doubt that my studies at UCLan will enable me to continue into my future career and being successful in the Chevening scholarship really will make my dreams come true!”
