University of Hull Overview

The University of Hull attained university status in 1954 and is located in the north of England. Over 20,000 students are divided between a main campus in Hull and a smaller campus in Scarborough, in the north of Yorkshire.

Hull’s traditional strengths lie in politics, English, health subjects and environmental science. Politics in particular sees strong employability of graduates, thanks to the Westminster Hull Internship Programme, which offers internships to students, often in the House of Commons. The University has also recently completed work on a new biomedical research building, which focuses on cancer, and cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.

Despite being classed as a ‘redbrick university’, Hull’s varied architecture reveals the continuous development of its campus and facilities. The £27.4 million pound library refurbishment, completed for the 2014 term, is the latest example of the care that the University takes over student experience, which is reflected by high satisfaction scores.

University of Hull Services for International Students

The International Office provides all international students with pre-arrival information about visa applications. International Welcome Week consists of multiple talks and events, designed to help students settle in, get to know the university campus and staff, and set up bank accounts, mobile phone contracts, and other such things.

Once term is fully underway, international students can partake in Go Connect, which aims to form links between British and international students in the region, and join the International Students’ Association.

University of Hull Location

The University of Hull’s main campus is just outside the city centre, with a smaller campus in nearby Scarborough. Kingston-upon-Hull itself is a city in Yorkshire, 345 km north of London. It is 25 km inland from the North Sea and has been awarded the UK City of Culture award for 2017.

Scarborough is found in the north of Yorkshire, about 70 km north of Hull. It is an historic seaside town, and the largest holiday resort on the North Sea coast. As well as tourism, it retains a heritage as a fishing village, with a large natural harbour and sweeping views from the cliffs. In more recent years it has become a centre for technology and culture, with some of the fastest Wi-Fi in Europe and numerous festivals throughout the year.
