Scholarships at Royal Veterinary College

In 2017 Elizabeth Catt left a legacy in her will to assist individual students to become effective members of the veterinary professions.

Eligibility

To ensure we provide support to offer holders from underrepresented backgrounds, we use contextual information from the UCAS application as a part of the awarding process. The following information is considered:

• Whether the applicant is from a low participation neighbourhood, using HEFCE POLAR 4 and Index of Multiple Deprivation data.

• Whether the applicant is a care leaver (this must have been declared on the UCAS application to be considered).

• Whether the applicant has received Free School Meals (this must have been declared on the UCAS application to be considered).

• Whether the applicant is a refugee (this must have been declared on the UCAS application to be considered).

• Whether the applicant has a disability (this must have been declared on the UCAS application to be considered).

• Whether the applicant is the first in their family to attend Higher Education, not including siblings (this must have been declared on the UCAS application to be considered).

• Whether the applicant has attended a school/college at level 2 and at level 3 that the RVC has determined is a contextual school.

Priority is given to those meeting multiple contextual markers. This data is combined with your score from the interview process and the scholarship will be offered to the candidate with the highest combined score once all offers have been processed and before the UCAS decision deadline, usually in May.

This scholarship is available to mature students applying for a place on any RVC undergraduate course.

• Out of education for five years prior to the commencement of the course they are applying to study

For those applying for the Nursing or Veterinary Medicine courses, the interview scores will be combined with this information and for those applying for the Biosciences courses, their personal statement will be assessed. The most suitable candidate will be offered the scholarship once all offers have been processed and before the UCAS decision deadline, usually in May.

This scholarship was established by a gift in the will of Leonard Geffen, an RVC Alumnus (1941) and was named for his favourite dog, a St Bernard called Rufus of Ruskinmere.

In March, eligible international offer holders are asked to submit a supporting statement for why they deserve the scholarship. A shortlist is sent to a reviewing panel who score the applications and the scholarship will be awarded before the April VMCAS deadline.

All international offer holders are eligible to apply for this scholarship which recognises an applicant who has already made a notable contribution to their community, school, workplace, or other areas of societal benefit and demonstrates potential for further impact.

Eligibility

Eligible international offer holders will be invited to apply in March.  A shortlist is sent to a reviewing panel who score the applications and the scholarship will be awarded before the April VMCAS deadline.

The undergraduate scholarship is £3,000 per year for the duration of the course (except retake years) and is applicable to any UG course. One scholarship is available per academic year.

Interested parties will be asked to get in touch with the Admissions team to discuss their individual circumstances. Scholarships we be allocated to offer holders who meet the following basic criteria

• Located in the UK with a UK immigration status which recognises that they are a refugee or have been granted humanitarian protection and unable to access or complete higher education

• No previous study for a higher education degree in the UK or EU (this does not include periods of time in the UK or EU for study abroad, Erasmus, work or clinical placements)

• Received an offer of admission for entry from the RVC

• Demonstrate knowledge of, and commitment, to, their chosen course

• Achieve a minimum level 7 in their IELTS assessment

This scholarship is kindly funded by philanthropic funds given to the RVC and the RVC’s charity, the Animal Care Trust.
