Located in the heart of England, the University of Derby has built on their region’s heritage of innovation to provide industry-relevant, expert teaching, from foundation and undergraduate degrees through to postgraduate study and research. The University is home to more than 1,700 international students from 100 countries studying at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Rated Gold in the Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework and a top 30 UK University in the Guardian University Guide 2020, Derby’s academic strength is backed up by practical experience to ensure students are ready for a successful career. They offer a wide range of subjects which will help students develop the skills and confidence to aim high.

If support is needed – either with course or with life as an international student – the University’s International Student Centre (ISC) can help. Derby’s ISC was rated the best of all UK universities that participated in the International Student Barometer 2018, which measures international students’ experience of higher education.

Derby also came out on top in the International Student Barometer 2018 rankings among the UK Modern Universities group for the formal welcome given to students arriving at the University from overseas, and first among the UK Modern Universities group for multi-cultural learning and faith support. The Purple Flag awarded the city of Derby as being a welcoming and safe place with lots going on for international students to really experience British culture.

Services for International Students

There is a friendly welcome awaiting you at Derby. Their International Student Centre was ranked the best of all UK universities that participated in the International Student Barometer 2018, which measures international students’ experience of higher education. The International Student Centre supports all of our international students with a broad range of services, as well as helping you to settle in the UK and make new friends.

The team offers services, advice and social activities which will help you settle smoothly into life in the UK. You will discover secure, affordable accommodation in our excellent halls of residence too.

The University runs a pickup service from Heathrow, Manchester and East Midlands airports for new international starters, and this is followed up by an induction program which takes place in the week before term begins. All students also have access to a dedicated Welfare Advisor.

If you are moving into Derby's halls of residence, the University will provide you with a free arrival pack, bed pack and kitchen pack as soon as you reach your destination. They include essential items of food, cutlery and bedding.

Fees and Finance

Students from outside the EU who are studying on campus will pay international student fees. All international undergraduate fees are £14,045 per year for students starting their course in September 2020.

Postgraduate degrees are competitively priced, and all essential equipment and activities are included. The most up-to-date fees will be listed on the course page – search for your course and look for the section on fees.

Scholarships

The University of Derby have a range of scholarships and discounts available to international students from countries in the European Economic Area (EEA) and outside the European Union (EU), offering a reduction in fees during first year of study. Scholarships are awarded based on the application to study; there is no separate form to complete. All applications from eligible students will be considered for a scholarship by the international admissions team. Students will be notified if they have been awarded a scholarship when an offer has been made, and the discount will be applied to the remaining fees.

Students must be applying for a full-time degree. Applications for postgraduate research, online studies, foundation and pre-sessional language programmes are not eligible for a discount or scholarship.
