What is this event about?

Three new interdisciplinary engineering Masters’ degrees, set to start in September 2023, are being offered by the UCL Department of Chemical Engineering. These courses will be housed in purpose-built, state-of-the-art, interdisciplinary labs - the Manufacturing Futures Lab and the Advanced Propulsion Lab - at UCL East, our new campus on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in East London.

Our Master's degrees are designed to equip the next generation of engineers with the practical skills needed to employ new technologies and methodologies, which have significantly broadened the scope of what can be done in the materials, manufacturing and transport industries, and hold the key to ensuring sustainable development in these sectors.

What are the new courses?

• The Digital Manufacturing of Advanced Materials MSc provides a holistic digital approach to develop and produce advanced materials such as new drug molecules and pharmaceuticals, materials for energy generation and storage, catalysts facilitating sustainable processes, functional nanomaterials for biomedical applications, and more.
  - Hosted by Dr Max Besenhard (MSc director) and Dr Reza Abbasi.
• The Advanced Propulsion MSc will train you to address the challenges of Net Zero in the areas of batteries, fuel cells and electric machines. This highly skilled workforce is critical to electrifying automotive, marine and air transport and achieving ambitious climate targets.
  - Hosted by Dr James Robinson, Lecturer in Advanced Propulsion.

• The Nature-Inspired Solutions MSc will help you translate insights from natural materials, processes, and systems, into disruptive and sustainable technologies to drive bio-inspired innovation in diverse industries, including process engineering, materials, manufacturing, biomedicine, catalysis, water, renewable energy, built environment, or biosciences.
  - Hosted by Dr Diego López Barreiro, Lecturer in Nature-Inspired Chemical Engineering.

In this event, you will be able to learn more about the courses and how the skills they teach can help you access exciting, rewarding industrial or academic careers in STEM directly from the academics who both helped design the courses and will be teaching you next year, should you enrol.

This event is ideal for students who will be finishing their undergraduate studies this summer; recent graduates; or graduates with industry experience from all STEM disciplines – particularly with an interest in materials, manufacturing and transport electrification.

Entry Requirements

A Bachelor's degree with an overall grade of 2:1 from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard in the following: 

• Nature Inspired Solutions MSc: Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Environmental Science and Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, Biomedical Engineering, Aerospace and Manufacturing Engineering, Biosciences, Biomedicine, Civil Engineering, Life Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, and their allied fields.
• Advanced Propulsion MSc: Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, or a relevant discipline.
• Digital Manufacturing of Advanced Materials MSc: Engineering and Science graduates, e.g. Biochemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry and Physics, Environmental Science and Engineering, and their allied fields.

Industry route: Digital Manufacturing of Advanced Materials MSc applications from prospective students with at least 2 years of relevant industry experience in the last 5 years and a 2:2 Bachelor’s degree/recognised international equivalent will also be considered.
