Scholarships at Met Film School

MetFilm School is pleased to announce the 2023 Voices That Matter Scholarship – Women in the Screen Industries.

The Women in the Screen Industries Scholarship is designed to support the next generation of female filmmakers, recognising the importance of diversity, equality, and inclusion within the screen industry.

A recent skills audit of the UK Film Industry by the Work Foundation for the BFI found that the industry is severely lacking in female talent.

The scholarship only applies to MetFilm School degree courses, the BA and MA programmes in London, Berlin and Leeds. There is one scholarship available, in London, Leeds or Berlin.

Scholarship Details

Full tuition fees of the accredited course are covered for the duration of the course. This does not include costs towards accommodation, expenses or additional mentoring and coaching.

Courses eligible for the ‘Women in the Screen Industries – Voices That Matter Scholarship’ include:

• BA Practical Filmmaking (2 and 3 Years) in London and Berlin

• BA Screen Acting in London and Berlin

• MA Cinematography in London, Berlin, and Leeds

• MA Directing in London, Berlin, and Leeds

• MA Documentary and Factual in Berlin

• MA Film and Television Production in London

• MA Post Production in London

• MA Producing in London

• MA Screenwriting in London, Berlin, and Leeds

Eligibility

This is a discretionary award, and applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Applicants must be over 18 at the time they start their studies with us.

• Applicants must be female.

• If shortlisted, applicants must provide evidence of financial need.

• Applicants must provide examples of creative work that meet the criteria of the different awards.

• Applicants must have received an unconditional offer to receive their scholarship.

• Applicants must be able to support themselves during the duration of the courses they are studying. The Scholarship, if awarded, only covers tuition fees.

Recognising the importance of accessibility, diversity and inclusion within the screen industries, MetFilm School is pleased to announce our new 2023 Voices That Matter Scholarship – for a Black Student of talent in memory of Dan Demissie.

On the 30th July 2019, MetFilm School graduate Dan Demissie tragically lost his life. Dan was a student on our One Year Filmmaking programme, during which time he pitched an idea for a feature film to the MetFilm Production team. That idea turned into the feature film, Town of Runners, which Dan – as a graduate – coproduced. Dan later went on to study at the NFTS and came back to MetFilm Production as a producer on School in the Cloud.

Released in 2012, Town of Runners tells the story of two young girls, living in a rural town in Ethiopia, Bekoji, as they try to run their way to a different life, and follows their highs and lows over three years as they try to become professional athletes. Through their struggle, the film gives a unique insight into the ambitions of young Ethiopians living between tradition and the modern world. Little White Lies described the film as the Sleeper Hit of the Olympic Year, and Total Film said: “In an Olympic year, here’s an inspirational reminder of what it’s all about.” Watch this inspiring little film of Dan’s perspective on the evolution of this film.

Together with his family, we are delighted to announce our new Dan Demissie Voices That Matter Scholarship in his memory, which will offer a full-ride scholarship to a MetFilm School BA or MA programme to one black student each year.

Eligibility

• Applicants have one of the following categories of ethnicity: Black African; Black Caribbean; Black Other; Mixed – White and Black Caribbean; Mixed – White and Black African; or Other mixed background (to include Black African, Black Caribbean or Black Other).

• Applicants must provide examples of creative work that meet the criteria of the different awards.

• Applicants must have received an unconditional offer to receive their scholarship.

• Applicants must be able to support themselves during the duration of the courses they are studying. The Scholarship, if awarded, only covers tuition fees.

For those who wish to study at our Berlin campus, we are offering one scholarship to a student of talent.

MetFilm School Berlin is based at BUFA Studios, one of the oldest film studios in Europe, located in the Tempelhof/Neukölln area of Berlin. BUFA Studios has been a part of film history since the silent era, even working on one of the first ever horror films, The Golem (1920) by Carl Boese and Paul Wege.

This scholarship applies to MetFilm School Berlin BA & MA courses. There is one scholarship available.

MetFilm School Leeds is based within Prime Studios, a state-of-the-art media production facility which includes make-up and wardrobe studios, props storage, as well as cinema and event spaces.

Prime Studios has already collected an extensive list of productions, including The Duke, Hope Gap, and The ABC Murders, and is located right next door to ITV Studios, where the flagship soap Emmerdale is filmed.

This scholarship only applies to MetFilm School Leeds MA courses. There is one scholarship available.
