The University of Salford has a long history of working with industry, improving on its traditional strengths of nursing, engineering and sports medicine. It was founded in its original form in 1850 before being awarded full university status in 1967, and there are currently over 20,000 students enrolled across 60 acres of parkland on the banks of the River Irwell.
Following the results of the National Student Survey, 83% of Salford graduates were satisfied with their time at the University. Improvements were also made in all subject areas, with 100% satisfaction in Media Technology, Petroleum and Mechanical Engineering, Professional Studies Nursing and Social Work and Architecture Design and Technology.
Salford was one of the first universities to offer a ‘sandwich’ degree, a year-long work placement, while its most recent development is MediaCityUK, which allows students to work and study with numerous companies in order to gain vital experience and contacts. Students studying at MediaCity have the chance to collaborate with the BBC in a working studio environment and six national departments, as well as companies such as Adobe and BAE Systems.
The University of Salford offers InterLINK, a way of introducing new international students to another student who knows about living in the UK and being a student at Salford. InterLINK mentors are students from the UK who can give international students friendly advice and support and help them to get used to living and studying at the University. The student union runs the International Society for International Students, while The International Life Centre at University House hosts a number of events and activities throughout the year.
Salford also runs a number of English language programmes for international students, ranging from an International Foundation Year to the eight-week Super Intensive Summer Study English Programme.
The results of REF 2021 confirm the excellence of the research carried out at Salford and the University of Salford is delighted to report that 78% of the University of Salford's research has been rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.
Highlights include:
· In five unit submissions the University of Salford's research impact was rated as 100% outstanding or very considerable in terms of reach and significance;
· The University of Salford's highest performing submission for ‘outputs’ was Area Studies with 44% rated as world-leading and 94% rated as world-leading or internationally excellent;
· The University of Salford's highest performing submission for ‘impact’ was Social Work & Social Policy with 75% of impact rated as outstanding and 100% rated as outstanding or very considerable;
· The University's highest performing submission for ‘environment’ was Architecture, Built Environment and Planning with 63% of the environment rated as world-leading and 100% rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.
All first year students are guaranteed a place in University accommodation provided they apply within the deadline, with Constantine Court and Horlock Court both based on campus, while all other accommodation is a short distance away and a free campus bus service is provided during term time.
Constantine Court is en-suite, in houses of 13 students, while Horlock has houses of 12 students. The student village just off campus has 11 bedroom houses or 6 bedroom flats, all with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities.
The University of Salford is located close to the city centre of Manchester in the north of England. Over 70,000 students choose to live in Manchester, making it the on of the biggest student populations in Europe. Salford has a reputation for having a lively cosmopolitan lifestyle and vibrant city centre with a distinctive European feel. It has a celebrated music and creative scene and numerous art galleries and museums, set in red brick Victorian architecture. The city also hosts two famous football clubs and many sporting arenas from the Commonwealth Games.
