Scholarships at Teesside University

In partnership with The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK, we offer three scholarships that fully cover tuition fees to candidates from certain Commonwealth countries.

These scholarships are aimed at candidates who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK and are offered under six themes:

1. Science and technology for development
2. Strengthening health systems and capacity
3. Promoting global prosperity
4. Strengthening global peace, security and governance
5. Strengthening resilience and response to crises
6. Access, inclusion and opportunity

Commonwealth PhD Scholarships

This scholarship is offered to candidates from the least developed and fragile Commonwealth countries who wish to study a PhD in the UK.

Commonwealth Split-site (PhD) Scholarships (for low- and middle-income country candidates)

This scholarship is offered to candidates from low and middle income Commonwealth countries who wish to spend up to 12 months at a UK university as part of their doctoral studies in their home country.

Commonwealth (PhD) Scholarships (for high income countries)

These scholarships are funded by the UK Department for Education in conjunction with UK universities to support world class research and to contribute to UK higher education and research to help sustain international recognition of the UK higher education system and for the benefit of wider society.

Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships

This scholarship is offered to candidates from low and middle income Commonwealth countries, to undertake full-time taught Master’s study at a UK university.

In partnership with the British Council and the GREAT Britain Campaign, Teesside University is offering 3 scholarships for September 2023 to students in Malaysia, Indonesia and Turkey applying for postgraduate courses.

• Value of scholarship: £10,000
• Number of scholarships available: 3 GREAT Scholarships.

The GREAT Scholarships 2023 programme, launched by the British Council together with 49 UK universities, supports postgraduate students from Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam to access world-class UK higher education opportunities.

The scholarship programme offers financial support of a minimum of £10,000 to students pursuing one-year postgraduate study in the UK. Students can apply for courses in a range of subjects, at the 49 institutions across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Eligibility criteria

To be considered for a GREAT scholarship, you must:

• Be a national of one of the following countries: Sri Lanka to Bangladesh for January 2023 entry and from Turkey, Malaysia or, Indonesia for September 2023 entry
• Be assessed as international for tuition fee purposes
• Be self-funded
• You must hold an offer from Teesside University (Conditional or Unconditional) by 30 April 2023 for a postgraduate taught one-year master's programme, commencing September 2023

How to apply

Candidates will be automatically considered for this scholarship; no separate scholarship application is necessary. The scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding candidate displaying exceptional academic merit, displayed in their academic application.

Teesside University offers a range of scholarships for eligible international students who demonstrate academic excellence in their application. The aim of these scholarships is to support students who receive the highest grades prior to joining the University.

The Scholarship value is £2,000 in your first full academic year of study (all successful applicants on a foundation, undergraduate or postgraduate programme). Applicants on a foundation/pathway programme delivered at Teesside University International Study Centre are not eligible for the scholarship, but will be considered for the scholarship on progression to a full degree programme at Teesside University.

The scholarship is allocated as a fee waiver.

If you meet the criteria below, you will automatically be considered (but not guaranteed) the scholarship. You do not need to apply separately or contact the University to be considered for the scholarship, but will be assessed using details on your course application by the Department of International Development. If you are successful, you will be notified by the University after the deadline for all applications has passed. All eligible international applicants will be assessed by the International Scholarships Committee.

• On a foundation, undergraduate or postgraduate programme, applying to study at Teesside for the first time. Excludes students on pathway/foundation programmes at Teesside University International Study Centre, however you may be considered for this scholarship on progression to a full degree programme at Teesside University.
• A full-time sponsored or self-funding student, paying international fees starting your course in January 2023.

Please note, this scholarship cannot be offered in conjunction with any other Teesside University scholarship.

About the Scholarship

This prestigious scholarship recognises applications from outstanding students who can demonstrate their skills and commitment to becoming future global leaders.

There are up to 30 Vice-Chancellor's Scholarships available, of £5,000 each, allocated as a fee waiver in the first year of study.

The scholarships are designed to assist international students, enrolling in September 2023 for the first time at Teesside University, to study an undergraduate degree or postgraduate taught degree.

Point of entry: For students enrolling in September 2023.

Eligibility criteria: 

To be eligible to apply for the Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship, you will:

• Be a genuine applicant, intending to study an international fee-paying undergraduate (including Level 0) or postgraduate taught degree level course, enrolling for the first time at Teesside University.

• Start your course in September 2023.

• Submit an application for consideration.

Please note: The Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship may not be used in conjunction with any other Teesside University Scholarship or Alumni Scholarship.

Applications for the Vice-Chancellor scholarship are currently open. The deadline for applications is 5.00pm on 5 June 2023. Please complete the application form with all requested information prior to submission. You will not be able to edit the application once you have submitted it. Successful recipients will be notified via email once the Scholarship committee has reviewed all applications.

Conditions of the Scholarship

Successful recipients of the Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship will be required to act as an ambassador for the University for the duration of your studies, which may involve but is not limited to the following:

• representing Teesside University at Open Days

• contributing to marketing and promotional materials

• participating in international student events

• acting as a mentor to fellow students

• contributing to/creating a blog or vlog to report on your experience at Teesside University

You are also required to continue to engage with the University as a valued member of our global alumni.

If you are an undergraduate international fee-paying student at Teesside University and wish to progress to postgraduate study, or if you complete a master's with us and progress a new postgraduate programme, you are eligible for a £1,000 alumni scholarship. You will only receive the bonus if you apply directly to us and don't use an agent and the £1,000 is awarded as a discount on your first-year fees for the next programme.

Study level: Postgraduate.
