Aston University is situated in the centre of Birmingham and was founded in 1895, eventually becoming a university in 1966. Aston University has over 9,500 students enrolled from more than 130 countries, and the University consistently ranks high in various league tables. It is currently ranked 8th overall in the UK for gradate employability by the Times Higher University Guide.

Almost all undergraduate degrees at Aston University offer students the chance to study on a sandwich course, which includes a paid work placement or a year of study at one of Aston's partner institutions around the world. The Times notes that “almost nine out of ten Aston students – far more than the national average – go into jobs, often returning to the scene of their work placement.”

Aston University’s four different schools offer undergraduate, postgraduate and foundation programmes, and the University is in the top 25 in the UK for student satisfaction. For international students flying into the city, Birmingham International Airport is 20 minutes away from the university, and London is a 90 minute journey by rail or two hours' drive.

Services for International Students

An International Orientation Programme runs at the beginning of each year to provide information and support to new international students. Student volunteers or ‘Aston Aunties’ help to meet-and-greet students as they arrive at Birmingham International Airport and help them adapt to the new culture and experiences awaiting them.

A team of International Student Advisers and Welfare staff who specialise in visas and immigration are available throughout the year, while students are also allocated a personal tutor to guide them through any academic issues during their study.

  • 29th in the Guardian University Guide 2017

For over 20 years, Aston University has been a leader on graduate employability, while in 2011 the High Flyers survey ranked Aston among the top 20 UK universities most likely to be targeted by leading recruiters. Overall student satisfaction at the University is 89%. In the most recent subject rankings, Aston ranked well in the following:

  • 1st for Health Professionals (Guardian)
  • 5th for Pharmacy (Guardian)
  • 1st for Subject Allied to Medicine (Times Guide)
  • 5th for Accounting & Finance (Times Guide)

The prestigious Aston Business School is one of only 1 per cent of schools worldwide that hold triple accreditation from AMBA, EQUIS and AACSB, and ranks consistently highly in both the Financial Times and the Economist’s rankings. Aston University was ranked first for student quality of life in 2010, while FHM and Virgin Student ranked it amongst the friendliest universities in the country.

Aston University guarantees international non-EU students campus accommodation for the whole of their study. EU students are guaranteed university campus accommodation for the first year of their studies and can apply for campus accommodation in the subsequent years.

Aston’s campus is in the centre of Birmingham and contains 3,000 en-suite rooms. They are all five minutes’ walk from the main university buildings and the centre of Birmingham.
