Overview

The University of Derby is based across three campuses in the midlands and was awarded university status in 1992. Almost 30,000 students are currently enrolled, 1,500 from overseas, and the University has strategic partnerships with colleges and universities across Europe, USA, Africa and Asia.

The University of Derby has a well-established history of teaching art and design, education, health, technology and photography. Seminars and employability skills training sessions are held regularly to improve the prospects of securing employment after graduation, while 96% University of Derby of full time first degree graduates are in work or further study, putting Derby 10th in the UK for employability.

The majority of classes feature less than 30 students giving it a personal and friendly atmosphere, while the small city of Derby provides an intimate but still busy picture of life in the UK. Derby as a city is unique in that it boasts the highest average salary outside of London at £32,900, and the University of Derby’s corporate initiative has a number of programmes in place to introduce students to the local businesses in town.

The University of Derby offers international students scholarships of £3000 and bursaries of £500 to EU students. 

Services for International Students

University of Derby’s International Student Centre was voted the Number 1 in the UK by international students in 2015 for their support services. The University runs a pickup service from Heathrow, Manchester and East Midlands airports for new international starters, and this is followed up by an induction program which takes place in the week before term begins. All students also have access to a dedicated Welfare Advisor.

If the student is staying in University of Derby halls, then they can arrive a week before UK universities and stay in the halls free of charge. Individual workshops are available to all students depending upon their requirements and needs. Accommodation was also ranked Number 1 in the 2015 National Student Barometer.

96.7% of full time first degree graduates are in work or further study making Derby 10th in the UK for student employability. The University is also first for student support, third for lecture quality, learning technology and employability, out of all the UK’s modern universities.

In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, 75% of Univeristy of Derby was classed as ‘internationally significant’.

Accommodation

The main University of Derby campus has seven halls of residence in the ‘university quarter’ of the city. The furthest away is only a five minute bus ride from the main campus and all rooms have their own wash basin or en suite facilities. There is also one hall of residence at the Buxton campus.

Private accommodation is also available in and around Derby and Buxton and the University has a list of approved and recommended accommodation. All first-year international students who apply by the July deadline are guaranteed a place in halls. Derby is currently undergoing a £3-million redevelopment of accommodation.

Location

The University has three campuses in Derby, Buxton and Chesterfield. Derby is a busy city, which is less than an hour from Birmingham and about 90 minutes from London via train. Buxton is a picturesque small town on the edge of the Peak District National Park. It's about an hour from Derby and Manchester and three hours from London.

The nearest airport to the Derby campus is East Midlands Airport and is less than 20 minutes away. For the Buxton campus Manchester airport is more convenient and takes around 90 minutes to travel to.
