Overview

Swansea University is based in south Wales and currently has almost 20,000 students enrolled on a large single campus. Traditional strength lies in research output across the areas of Life Sciences, Health and Engineering. The University boasts one of the only supercomputers in the world dedicated to life sciences research, and the physics department benefits from strong links with the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.

Established in 1920, Swansea University has international links with over 100 institutions worldwide, allowing students to study abroad and researchers to collaborate on a larger scale. The University was named University of the Year by the Whatuni? Student Choice awards in 2014 and was given five stars for its excellence by the QS University Guide.

Services for International Students

At the beginning of the year, Swansea runs a meet and greet service from Heathrow Airport as well as a week-long induction programme to help students settle in. During term time, the English Language Training Service offers personalised English language support, as well as numerous pre-sessional courses.

Ranking

  • 44th in the Times University Guide 2017
  • 39th in the Guardian University Guide 2017

94% of the work Swansea submitted during the 2014 Research Excellence Framework was rated as ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. Engineering at Swansea is of particular strength.

Accommodation

Residential Services provides accommodation for almost 4,500 students and all first year undergraduate and postgraduate students are guaranteed University accommodation. The largest site is 4km from the main Singleton Campus, with over 1,000 rooms available. Most accommodation areas are a mixture of en suite and standard rooms for all students. Catered options, as well as Welsh-speaking rooms and blocks, are also available.

The university also runs Student Accommodation Swansea, which arranges shared houses for students in the city, as well as assisting students in finding private rented accommodation.

Location

Swansea is Wales’ second-largest city, on its south coast about 70km west of Cardiff. The University is near the city, set in parkland by the beach of Swansea Bay, on a single campus. While the area is mostly famous for watersports and coastal scenery, the city provides a vibrant nightlife and cultural scene.

  • Lyn Evans CBE (Project Leader, Large Hadron Collider, CERN)
  • Paul Pindar (Chief Executive of Capita)
